The Return of a Gaming Icon
10+ Years in the Making
Ninja Gaiden is, without a doubt, one of the most iconic franchises in all of video game history. For more than 30 years, Ryu Hayabusa has been bringing fast-paced, style-driven combat action to consoles across every generation. So, as you can imagine, Skylight was thrilled to have an opportunity to partner with Xbox Game Studios, Team NINJA, and PlatinumGames to develop a brand identity and toolkit for the launch of Ninja Gaiden 4, the first new entry into the franchise in over 10 years!
Knowing the deep roots and iconic nature of the Ninja Gaiden franchise, our task was a little different for developing this logo, compared to what we do with new IP. We aimed to walk the line between owning our heritage while bringing small but meaningful updates into the logo to signal to new and returning fans that we aren’t just rehashing the past, we’re ushering in the future of fast-paced, visceral action. Our team focused on bold color pairing, clean lines, and simple texturing to ensure flawless legibility in digital storefronts. And we leveraged the addition of the “4” as an opportunity to formally signal the bloody, sword-based combat of the game.
Where the Ninja Gaiden logo was a design task focused on clean, minimal design language, the logo animation and mnemonic was our opportunity to be big and visceral. Our team focused on bringing the fast-paced, precision slices of Ryu Hayabusa’s iconic Ryuken (Dragon Sword) into play visually and sonically to dial up the speed and energy of the animation. And, of course, this just wouldn’t be Ninja Gaiden without buckets of blood. Following each strike of the sword, a trail of blood followed, creating a stark color contrast and dynamic visual energy for this asset.
The real show-stopper piece for this Ninja Gaiden 4 program was, of course, the hero key art. This art needed to find a compelling and dynamic way to bring together a long list of key story and lore elements that could help merge the franchise’s history with its future, inviting all fans to take part in the action. The art is anchored by the two heroes of Ninja Gaiden 4: Ryu Hayabusa, the iconic franchise hero, and Yakumo, a new protagonist who will expand the Ninja Gaiden universe. Our heroes are placed in a dark, but vibrant cyber-punk Neo-Tokyo where ghosts, monsters, and machines reign terror on its citizens.
Beyond the baseline visual identity elements (logo and key art), Skylight also provided the team at Xbox Game Studios with a toolkit and marketing font to expand the overall system to help support a robust launch for Ninja Gaiden 4.
As a final chapter in the overall Ninja Gaiden 4 program, Skylight worked closely with the Xbox Game Studios team to establish a creative and communications strategy to support the launch of the game in market, culminating in a compelling tagline for the launch campaign across global markets. It’s a story beat that acknowledges the legendary status of the franchise and hints at the darkness looming in this latest entry into the series. This is not a game to be missed!
